Kellen Green, whose stage name is simply, "Kellen" entered the White Wash Productions studio in early June with a confidence that is typically not present for someone who has little time invested inside a recording facility.
The initial idea of producer Daniel L. Bamberg was for Kellen, whose voice is haunting and dynamic, to perform a unique version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Kellen instead showed he and producer David Coffin lyrics to her original song, "Second Best." It was then decided that the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" idea should be scrapped.
After Kellen laid down vocals to her own song, Coffin who appears on the album under his hip hop stage name, White Wash decided to work with her for the CD's title track. Kellen's chorus and verse to that song were written by Bamberg.
"What she put down in the studio was not anything like what I thought the song would sound like," explained Bamberg.
"It is amazing watching someone work with your words, deliver their own interpretation and make it better than could be imagined. I was not only impressed with her vocal talents but her ability to work through the creative differences with everyone involved in the track and somehow what she said went. That song became hers and David's the moment she entered into the booth. What those two have done with a handful of simple lines is phenomenal. There are several amazing tracks on this album, many will be shocked at the production value, but with this song in particular - I mean, this is a benefit and that is all it has ever been, but that song is radio material, that song is a hit. Once people hear it there won't be any argument to that."
The title track will be the front running song to help push the album's cause. The song was inspired directly by the April 27th tornado and was written specifically for the victims in this state. The song opens with news audio from the day of the storm.
Kellen's "Second Best" and "Rage Against the Wind (with White Wash)" are certain stands out for the RATW compilation CD.
The lyrics to "Rage Against the Wind" follow:
RAGE AGAINST THE WIND
performed by: White Wash and Kellen
lyrics: Daniel L. Bamberg and David Coffin
music: David Coffin
I think the Devil laughed the day that Dixie cried
But he took for granted and forgot the heart of Southern pride
You may take away the places we reside, but someone lied
if they said that Southerners would just give up and hide
If we work together, nothing is impossible
Band together and we can get through any obstacle
Because the Devil tried to test our faith and throw us off the right track
But he didn’t expect for us to ball up our fists and fight back
Rage against the wind
Brave the darkest storm
Rage a war with bonds of love
Those tested never worn
Arm your hearts with faith
Embrace the reigns of fate
Tend to chains of hand on hand
and rage against the wind
Our Southern spirit is still intact
Replenish what we’ve lost, gather the pieces and build it back
Don’t you dare hang your head, raise it to the sky instead
Feel proud, you represent the flag of white and stripes of red
When you’re underneath it there’s nothing you can’t battle through
Dig deep, find the inner strength, drag it out of you
Never give up hope, if you have, you better listen close
If you need inspiration, do it for the ones you miss the most
Brick by brick, tooth and nail, keep moving until you prevail
You don’t have room to fail, together we’ll get through this hell
Turn this darkness into light, together we will find a way
I promise, just over the horizon is a brighter day
We made this music just for you, with hopes that we could lift your spirits
So that when you hear it, you will be proud of your perseverance
Celebrate the one’s who made it to Heaven’s gate
Because in the face of disaster this state may bend but never break
They say when the sky grows darker
The stars will always shine most bright
And when the fight grows harder
We may not pass into that night
The rain became our tears
But pain won’t shadow fear
We made a beginning of an end
And we raged against the wind
And we raged against the wind
