"Its the nature of the business," explained Coffin.
With his on stage name, White Wash he has performed in front of crowds as small as 3 and as large as 300. He has performed across the state of Alabama, places in Florida, places in Georgia, and in New York. Despite immediate praise and promises of recording contracts, he has yet to hit. This isn't because he isn't marketable but because White Wash will not dumb down his intellectual and socially conscious lyrics for mainstream hip hop.
"I have a love/hate relationship with hip hop," said Coffin. "I love the roots of the musical form. I love the sound of true underground hip hop. When rap is meaningful or at the very least lyrical it is very inspiring. When it's about selling shoes, degrading women, and making drugs, it is cliche and ignorant."
In his small hometown of Centreville, Alabama David has a sorted reputation. Some still see him as the punk kid who once rapped about his anatomy at the age of 15. But, David "White Wash" Coffin is a grown man these days. He's 22 years old, and is now a seasoned performer, producer, and lyricist.
"Anyone who knows what it actually takes to be a rapper could have never denied David's ability even at 15 years of age," explained 'Rage Against the Wind' executive producer Daniel L. Bamberg. "But now he has matured. He is rapping about important issues and is among the greatest satirists of our time whether he is ever recognized for that or not. I think it reflects poorly on anyone who judges an adult based upon their childhood."
White Wash has never shunned his critics or the controversy that surrounds him. As an individual however, David has found it hard for people to relate to him off stage. In 2009 he opened White Wash Productions where he has recorded his own music and produced several local acts. Now he has contributed his talents of producing to the "Rage Against the Wind" tornado relief CD.
"This album was just as much David's idea as it was mine. It is based upon a conversation he and I has," expressed Bamberg.
Coffin isn't just lending his production abilities to the effort but has also lent his original song, "Love Hate and Let it Go," to the album. He also appears with RATW artist, Kellen for the title track of the album.
"It hasn't been easy balancing my real job and getting this thing done, especially in this unbelievable death brigade time line Daniel set up for the project, but I love a challenge," said David. "More than that I am excited that I have recorded different genres. Typically the people who come into my studio are rappers. I didn't start the studio to just do rap. In fact I love it when someone shows up to my door with a guitar, because it gives me an opportunity to expand my horizons."
As producer, David Coffin he has produced 8 of the 15 songs which appear on the album and re-mastered 3. His hands are all over "Rage Against the Wind." As White Wash, David will be headlining the free benefit concert in Brent on Saturday, June 25. He is slated to take stage at 9:45 p.m.
"David is one of the hardest working musicians I know," said Bamberg. "He is also an exciting act to watch when he has a sound engineer behind him that knows what he or she is doing. He is also arguably the most talented artist in hip hop today. I think it is high time David gets a chance to headline a professional event. When his performance is over I think people are going to agree."
